Remarks

» The subspecies Ardea purpurea bournei is endemic to Santiago Island and considered highly endangered. Perhaps in the near future it will be treated as a full endemic species, Ardea bournei, due to significant differences in colour (it is much paler than the nominal subspecies) and behaviour, and also because its populations are isolated in an insular environment.
