The latest projects that the African Bird Club (ABC) is supporting through our Awards Programme are:
• A project on bird sound recording in Rwanda using citizen science methods by the Planet Birdsong Foundation and Mbonigaba Jean de Dieu (who received £3,000)
• A project on conserving threatened birds, climate resilience, people and nature in Kiang’ombe Hill Forest, Kenya, by James Mutunga Joshua (who was granted £3,000)
• A project using citizen science and community-based research to promote conservation of the Secretarybird in Nyanga IBA, Zimbabwe by Courage Tanatswa Chimbetete (who also received £3,000)
• An expedition looking at predation risk and adaptation of the critically endangered Raso Lark in the Marine Protected Area of Santa Luzia, Cabo Verde, by Stephane Caut (who was awarded £5,000)
• An urgent survey of Archer’s Lark (Liben Lark) in eastern Ethiopia by a BirdLife International team led by Bruktawit Abdu (who received £3,418)
• A population size estimate and threat assessment of Abyssinian Ground Hornbill in Nigeria by Yahkat Barshep (who was awarded £2,930)
• A survey of Fox’s Weaver in north-eastern Uganda by Jonathan Onongo (who received £2,900)
• A survey of Karamoja Apalis in north-eastern Uganda by Jombela Salmah (who received £2,950)
• A project generating acoustic training data for automated recognition of avian species found in Kruger National Park, South Africa by Tess Gridley and Cat Nadin (who were awarded £3,000)
• A project by Jessica Wilmot (who received £3,000) tracking European Rollers within the East Atlantic Flyway
• A project by Eston Kimaswoch (who was granted £3,000) to set up bird clubs in schools between Lakes Elmenteita and Nakuru in Kenya
• Monitoring of the endemic subspecies of Cream-colored Courser in Cabo Verde by Claudino Silva (who received £2,886)
• Field training of university students by Mathieu Mahamoud-Issa (who was awarded £1,870) to promote bird surveys in Djibouti
- A project looking at avi-tourism for White-necked Picathartes Conservation Addressing Nest Predation in Ghana by Joseph Kwasi Afrifa (who received £2,990)
- A study of the breeding ecology of the endangered Mt Cameroon Francolin and community-based conservation awareness, Cameroon, Francis Guetse (awarded £3,000)
- Organising bird Trips for the Village Bird Club Members near Kibale National Park, Uganda, by Julia Lloyd (awarded £2,163)
- Using camera traps to determine the causes of egg and chick failure in the Endangered Mauritius Kestrel in Mauritius (Vikash Yatayah, awarded £3,000)
- Youth for Sharpe’s Longclaw: engaging youth to conservation of birds and grasslands of Kinangop Plateau, Kenya (Martin Mwangi, awarded £2,985)
- Expanding knowledge of Sokoke Scops Owl distribution in the Dakatcha Woodland, Kenya (Kirao Lennox, A Rocha, awarded £2,945)
- An expedition searching for nests of the São Tomé Storm-petrel (Hydrobates aff. castro), São Tomé and Príncipe (Ricardo Faustino de Lima, awarded £4,600)
- A study of population status, threats and conservation awareness for White-backed Vulture in Tigray, Ethiopia (Amleset Gaim Kinfe, awarded £2,547)
- Assessing the population of Northern Ground-hornbills and threats to their conservation in Fazao-Malfakassa NP, Togo (Lin-Ernni Mikégraba Kaboumba. awarded £2,900)
