The country is party to the following international agreements: Biodiversity, Climate Change, Desertification, Endangered Species, and Tropical Timber 94. Many environmental issues exist and tap water is not drinkable.

Poaching has diminished the country's reputation as one of the last great wildlife refuges, and there is desertification and deforestation. There are 13 National Parks and Reserves which are protected legally and cover about 10% of the country and most of the habitat types.
