Main changes in the March 2010 version

Introduction

This new revision (March 2010) is updated to end of March 2010.

For this year’s update only minimal changes have been made.  

Updates and changes have been noted from:

Volume 14 of Handbook of the Birds of the World was published in late 2009 and includes bush-shrikes, drongos, vangas, crows, starlings and sparrows.

A new set of updates to the Clements checklist was put onto the web in December 2009 (version 6.4) (www.birds.cornell.edu/clementschecklist/corrections).

The IOC produced revised versions every few months (www.worldbirdnames.org) -- the latest is now version 2.4 dated March 2010.

Birdlife produced a new revision (www.birdlife.org/datazone/species/index.html) -- version 2 dated June 2009.

It has been noted that no further updates to the Howard & Moore list will be produced until they publish version 4.

These updates have revised a few preferred names (detailed below) but have mostly resulted only in changes to the notes.

As previously all references to HBW, CMT, IOC and BL now refer to the most recent version as per the above (ie including corrections and updates on the websites noted).  All relevant notes are included and they have been allowed for in deciding on any of the changes in preferred names noted.

For many years there has been a more or less standard order for families of birds and species within these (used by Birds of Africa for example and most earlier versions of the standard lists).  However in the last few years a new order has been proposed, which is considered to show more correctly the relationships between the various groups and their phylogenetic history.

It is now apparent that most organisations and checklists are adopting this revised order.  It has also placed several species into a more certain relationship to others after many years of great uncertainty and considerable variation as to treatments.  The most "controversial" of these species groups for this African Bird Club list has been some of the various Madagascan endemic passerines.

This March 2010 revision has retained the “traditional” order primarily for practical reasons.  However there is going to be increasing pressure to change this and the change is likely to occur in the next year or so.

Several people continue to point out errors and omissions and I am grateful to them all.  John Caddick in particular is responsible for many of these.

The Changes to Preferred Names in the March 2010 Version

As last year I have split these changes into 6 groups (although as will be seen not all have entries this time):

a)  Additions and Deletions; b) Splitting and Lumping; c) Family Moves; d) Changes to Scientific Names; e) Changes to English Names; f) Changes to French Names.

Most of the changes are corrections to typographical errors.

a) Additions and Deletions

Caprimulgus solala  Nechisar Nightjar  Engoulevent de Nechisar is taken out of square brackets -- it has recently been claimed and my placing into square brackets last year was clearly an error.

Turdus obscurus  Eye-browed Thrush  Merle obscure is added.

Locustella certhiola Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler  Locustelle de Pallas  is added.

b) Splitting and Lumping

Chersomanes beesleyi Beesley's Lark Alouette de Beesley is split off from within C. albofasciata.

Corvus cornix Hooded Crow Corneille mantelée  is split off from within C. corone.

c)  Family Moves

Hypocolius ampelinus Hypocolius Hypocolius gris has been moved into its own family Hypocoliidae (from Bombycillidae).

Note has been taken that many of the series of Madagascan endemics are now usually considered to be a group related between themselves and less so to others. This is likely to be incorporated into the next major revision and this may be accompanied by the major revision of the order of families and species within these -- see above.

d) Changes to Scientific Names

I am aware there are now some inconsistencies in terms of what has been accepted and what not. The whole list will come under scrutiny again fully in the next year or so especially if the decision is taken to change the overall order of families and species within them.

Serious consideration was given to the following and these at least are likely to happen in the next revision:

Splitting Turdus olivaceus Olive Thrush into several species

Merging Parisoma spp into  Sylvia

Splitting Laniarius aethiopicus Tropical (Ethiopian) Boubou into several species.

Main changes in the May 2009 version

Introduction

This new revision (May 2009) is updated to end of February 2009.

Summary of changes incorporated
1) It takes account of vol 13 of Handbook of the Birds of the World, the most recent updates of the Clements checklist, the revised versions of the International Ornithological Congress list and BirdLife list, the Roberts VII book (previously only the species list on the website had been seen) and, courtesy of Nigel Redman, sight of a proof copy of the new Helm guide to the birds of the Horn of Africa.
2) A review of taxonomy and scientific names, mainly in the light of these new sources and some comments from correspondents.
3) A fairly comprehensive review of English names and a brief one of French names.

More details of all these follow and at the end is a full list of the changes to preferred names since the previous version, dated January 2008.

Updates included

Volume 13 of Handbook of the Birds of the World was published in October 2008. Families of interest in this include Penduline Tits, Sunbirds, White-eyes, Orioles, true Shrikes (Laniidae) and a few smaller ones.

Changes noted in the most recent update to the 6th edition of the Clements checklist (published November 2008), those in the revised (version 2.0) list from the International Ornithological Congress (www.worldbirdnames.org) and those in the Birdlife checklist (version 1 dated May 2008) have been included.

Roberts VII is now incorporated fully whereas, for previous versions of this ABC list, I only had sight of their species list available on the web. In several cases the book notes a total number of races they accept for Africa (or the world) which is different from the number noted here. As the book usually only notes specifically those which occur in southern Africa (although sometimes there is some more explanation of those occurring outside of this area) it is not always clear which others in the list are accepted or not. Hence there are some notes such as 'ROB only has 5 races in Africa' whereas the ABC list has 4 or 6 (or other numbers) and I am not sure which ones are included. ROB now refers to: Hockey, P.A.R., Dean W.R.J. & Ryan P.G. 2005. Roberts' Birds of Southern Africa. 7th Edition. John Voelcker Bird Book Fund.

Nigel Redman has kindly let me see a proof copy of the new Helm Guide to the birds of the Horn of Africa, due to be published in spring 2009. This book states that it largely follows this African Bird Club list for nomenclature and incorporates some of the changes which are made to this new version. The actual differences are noted but those noted in the book as incipient, eg Upupa (epops) africana, are not.

Reviews of taxonomy, scientific names and English names

For this update I have quite extensively reviewed the names used by the various lists referred to in the compilation of this list.

Some changes to scientific names and some splitting and lumping have been incorporated where there is clear evidence that these are now generally accepted. There are several others (listed at the end under g) where there is clearly still considerable argument between sources as to the correct nomenclature and taxonomic status. These have been left as is for the present, pending clarification, although obviously they will remain under review.

For this new version I have carried out an extensive review of English names and a less extensive one of French names. For this all those species in the previous version of the list for which alternatives were listed have been reviewed and changes to the preferred name(s) have been made where it is clear that the wrong choice was previously the preferred. In most cases the previously preferred name is now among the alternatives. In addition to these noted below in a few cases other alternative names have been deleted as it was found they were not used in any of the works consulted as their preferred name -- they were among their alternatives.

I would like to put on record here that some of the changes, both of taxonomy and English names, and indeed some of the preferred names and taxonomy which have been retained, grate with my personal views and preferences. However I have tried to remain objective, and I am well aware that English names in particular are major causes of argument and potentially confusion. Whatever names are chosen will not be liked by everyone.

For this revision I am grateful to the following for pointing out errors and / or making various suggestions and with apologies to anyone I have inadvertently left out:
Nik Borrow, Bill Clark, Callan Cohen, Ron Demey, the late Ian Hinze, Moldovan Istvan, Guy Kirwan, Paul Meierhofer, Chris Merkord, Johann du Preez, Nigel Redman, Kevin Vang, and especially John Caddick who, among other things, tries to keep the Country checklists in synchrony and finds various anomalies as a result.

Main Changes since the revision of January 2008

The following changes to preferred names have been made in this new version (with changes to the accompanying notes as necessary).

In addition as details of the occurrence of some vagrants became known several species are no longer recorded as in brackets.

Main changes in the January 2008 version

The major change to this version over the previous (January 2007) one is the addition of Range and Status information for the passerines.

Changes to the main preferred names lines are detailed below. The only scientific name changes are those correcting errors. There are several preferred English name changes. Most of these are the adoption of the preferred IOC name, but this has only been done when this was supported by all other recent texts. Finally there have been several additional species added, the considerable majority being vagrants to one or more of the islands or island groups, especially of North American species occurring on islands in the North Atlantic.

All Introduced and doubtful species are placed in square brackets.

In addition now all Vagrants known only from islands (ie not on mainland Africa) and those where specific records are not known at all are placed in round brackets.

The new (6th) edition of the Clements checklist (CMT) has been noted and all notes referring to CMT now refer to this edition. Also the corrections and updates noted on the web (www.birds.cornell.edu/clementschecklist) have been incorporated (corrections and updates dated 18 July 2007 and 8 October 2007). (In practice the main changes this 6th edition have put onto this checklist have been to remove many of the instances where CMT was inconsistent with others.)

The new BirdLife checklist (http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/species/downloads/
BirdLife_Checklist_Version_0.xls) has been noted and incorporated as necessary (as BL). This is noted as being preliminary but was considered worth incorporating because of the legal status of a 'species' in some places and BirdLife's control over the Red List.

Finally the latest (vol.12) of Handbook of the Birds of the World has been noted (affecting Timaliidae and Paridae).

Main changes in the January 2007 version

Two substantial changes:

1)  The main list now in 2 parts:  a) Non-passerines to which brief notes of Status, Habitat and Range have been added; b)  Passerines (it is intended to put similar notes onto this part in due course).

2)  All names have been revisited and where the general consensus suggests that a change should be made to the main entry line this has been done with suitable modifications to the notes.  A list of changes to main names is included below.

Other changes have included:

1)  Updates to Clements’s checklist from www.ibispub.com dated July and December 2005.  (It is noted that a 7th edition of this checklist is due for publication in January 2007 and will be incorporated as appropriate in due course.)

2)  Updates to Howard & Moore’s checklist  dated 31 January 2006 at Howard & Moore update

3)  Handbook of Birds of the World volumes 10 and 11 (to end of warblers and flycatchers).

4)  The International Ornithological Congress list of English Bird Names has been incorporated.  Also the single asterisk following a secondary English name now indicates that this is the IOC preferred name (previously the asterisk indicated the name used by the Sinclair &Ryan fieldguide).
