Geography

Togo is a small narrow country with a land area of 56,785 km2 and an estimated population of about 5.5 million. It borders the Republic of Benin to its east, Ghana to the west and Burkina Faso in the north and has a coastline of 70 km. The climate is semi-arid in the north, gradually becoming wetter to the south with a humid tropical climate along the coast where the capital, Lomé, is situated. The north has a hot dry season from November to April when the dry harmattan wind blows in from the Sahara, and a hot rainy season from May to October. The land elevation is from sea level to the highest point, Mt Agou, at 986 m. The official language is French, with Ewe, Mina, Kabye and other African languages spoken.
