Geography

Located in the high-lying areas of eastern southern Africa, Swaziland comprises mainly mountainous areas which give way to lowlands in the east, the highest point being Emlembe at 1,862 m. One of the smallest countries in Africa, 17,363 km2 in size and with a population of 1,169,000 people, Swaziland’s mountainous terrain is covered largely with Afromontane forests, woodland and grassland. Broadleaf savanna and woodland is found in the middleveld area, which separates the high and low-lying areas. The lower lying eastern areas are characterised by Acacia savanna. The climate varies from tropical to near temperate. Languages spoken are English (official, government business conducted in English), and siSwati (also official).
