Geography

Mozambique is a country located on the east coast of Africa where it shares its borders with South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania. The land area is 801,590 km2 and it has a coastline which is 2,470 km long. A large coastal plain dominates almost half of the country and this is where the majority of the 18.8 million people reside. The coastal plain has largely been utilised for agriculture however it remains an important wintering ground for migrant waders.

Mountain ranges can be found in the west and in the north with the highest peak Monte Binga topping 2,436 m above sea-level. Two of Africa's major rivers, the Zambezi and the Limpopo flow through the country, while the Cabora Bassa dam is located on the former. During the dry season (April - September) the climate is pleasant, while in the wet season the climate is hot and humid with temperatures ranging from 27-29oC. The main languages are Makhuwa, Tsonga, Lomwe, Sena, numerous other indigenous languages and the official language, Portuguese is spoken by 27% of population as a second language.
