Geography

Libya is an enormous country with a land area of 1,759,540 km2 and a population of 5.5 million of which the majority live on the coastal plain. It borders Algeria and Tunisia in the west, Egypt and Sudan in the east and Niger and Chad in the south. Its Mediterranean coastline is 1,770 km. The climate is Mediterranean along the coast with a dry, extreme desert interior. More than 90% of the country is desert or semi-desert. The terrain is mostly barren, flat to undulating plains, plateaux and depressions with the lowest point at 47m below sea level and the highest at 2,267m. Arabic, Italian and English are widely understood in the major cities.
