Introduction

Guinea-Bissau is a small country in West Africa with a bird list of over 500 species. Although it has no endemic species, birding can begin near the capital Bissau and it is a rewarding destination as there is undoubtedly much that remains to be discovered. Much of the country’s coastal areas and inland forests are still in relatively good condition, and development has not affected the country as much as in other areas of West Africa.

The purpose of this document is to provide a summary of Guinea-Bissau and its birds for birders interested in the country and potentially planning a visit. The information has been put together from a number of sources and it is intended to add new information as it becomes available.
