Sound guides

Côte d'Ivoire is among the countries covered by Chappuis' recordings, many of which were made in the country. All Ivorian species, except the few whose voice is unknown, are included there. Two threatened species, Baumann's Greenbul Phyllastrephus baumanni and Yellow-footed Honeyguide Melignomon eisentrauti, have been tape-recorded since by R. Demey and N. Borrow but the recordings have not yet been published.

Safety

Côte d'Ivoire is currently not a recommended place to visit. The political situation is quite explosive and is unfortunately likely to get worse at the approach of the 2005 presidential elections. A civil war broke out in September 2002 and the country remains divided in two; the south under government control and the north under rebel control. A ceasefire was signed between the two parties in 2003 but has been broken several times. Little information is available about the situation in the rebel-owned zone, but it is certainly not a safe area and in any way it is hardly accessible. The government-owned south is not safe either; the alleged involvement of foreign countries in the crisis led to recent anti-foreign (especially anti-French) protests. Birders nevertheless visiting the country should be extremely cautious, especially since the use of binoculars may lead to them being mistaken for spies.
