Country checklist and status

You can download and print a checklist for Central African Republic.

Few ornithologists have ever lived in or visited Central African Republic and published their findings. The highlands and most of the east remain completely unexplored. Some attempts have been made to correct this situation in recent years and revise the species list. The official list currently stands at 729 species of which over 600 certainly or probably breed.

Endemic species

Note: Sangha Forest Robin Stiphrornis sanghensis has been described as a species new to science found only in the Dzanga-Sangha Forest Reserve to date where it is described as common. Other evidence suggests that it is in fact a subspecies of Forest Robin S. erythrothorax sanghensis and it is treated as such by the African Bird Club.

Near endemic species (found in 3 or less African countries)

Green- breasted Pitta Pitta reichnowi

Threatened species

Lappet-faced Vulture Torgos tracheliotus Vulnerable
Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni Vulnerable
Dja River Warbler Bradypterus grandis Vulnerable

The lists of endemic, near endemic and threatened species have been compiled from a number of sources including the African Bird Club, BirdLife International, and Birds of the World Version 2.0 ® 1994-1996, Dr. Charles Sibley and Thayer Birding Software, Ltd. For further information on Central African Republic’s threatened species, BirdLife International.
