Geography

Cameroon is positioned strategically in West and Central Africa (between 1°45' and 13°N and between 8°25' and 16°28'E). The topography and climate can be divided into four bio-geographic regions: the lowland forest; Mount Cameroon and the western highlands; the Adamawa plateau; and Northern Cameroon. The climate varies from tropical along the coast to semi-arid and hot in the north and the elevation ranges from sea level to 4,095 m.

Cameroon has a land area of 475,440 km2 and an estimated population of about 17 million. It is bordered to the east by Chad and the Central African Republic, to the south by the Republic of Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and to the west by Nigeria. The south-western border comprises a 350 km stretch of the Gulf of Guinea coastline, while the extreme north of the country is bordered by Lake Chad.

The capital is Yaoundé and the official languages are French and English with an additional 24 African language groups. More details can be found at CIA Factbook.
