Given its recent history, few birdwatchers have been to Burundi for a decade or more and records are limited. With a species list of almost 600 in such a small country, one can only hope that travel possibilities improve in the not too distant future.

This note from a correspodent who visited Burundi in February 2011 indicates that the situation has improved. "With great birds and given that the political situation in the country is now generally stable, the infrastructure is improving (including hotels), and that travelling around is cheaper than in other countries in the region (especially compared to Rwanda – for instance, entrance fee to Rusizi is less than 5 US Dollars, and in Kibira one is just expected to tip the forest ranger), I would definitely recommend Burundi to anyone who is interested in the region’s birds. Many of the Albertine Rift endemics can be found within a short distance of the capital."
